Second batch of salad – some initial thoughts on what works and what doesn’t

It’s usually at this time of year that my garden scheduling gets put to the test.  I now have masses of Mizuna going to seed and a few other lettuces going over.  The replacements are just a tad too small at the moment so I’m thinking that we may have a week or so with slightly bitter salads or none at all.  On the plus side the salad burnet is a real eye opener.  It’s a very very traditional salad leaf that lasts into winter apparently.  Pick the leaves young.  I just can’t pin down the taste (nutty, sweet, savoury) but I highly recommend it.  On the other hand Saltwort is a complete waste of space.  It comes as a replacement for samphire but my tiny plants have done nothing for weeks.  The taste is insipid and it just doesn’t make the cut for precious growing space in the garden.
