It has been a few weeks now since the cider was rackedoff and put into demi-johns. I have been bottling and labelling the cider for the last couple of weeks. As and when a set of bottles become available. As well as making my wife and her friends drink vast amounts of Cava I also [...] Once you get into maing your own cider or, in fact, any home brewing, you soon come to realise the value of strong bottles. I recently made a batch of beer and this is conditioned in the bottle with some glucose and all our cider is supposed to be fizzy so we condition that. This [...] On the 1st October I racked off the 12 gallons of cider from this years crop. In most demi-johns I put in a good dose of glucose. These are still bubbling quite nicely and I was a little worried that I had overdone the sugar (which I probably have) but the yeast seems so strong [...] It’s been about two weeks since we produced our first bacth of cider and the airlock from the first vessel is hardly bubbling. The juice is stil fizzing with yeast but it seems really sluggish (even at the temperature of our kitchen) at making bubbles through the lock. My guidance is to rack off once [...] It’s a constant source of annoyance to my wife that I cannot leave the fermentation barrels alone for five minutes. I’m forever tapping at the airlocks, shaking the barrels up, topping the locks up. Once all the prepartion and hard work is out of the way all you can really do is wait. From now [...] Each morning before I got to work I take each 6 gallon fermentation vat and give it a good shake and a spin. This is to stir the yeast up so that the nutrient and sugar rich juice is spread around as well as making sure the yeast gets to the juice. Sometimes the airlock [...] |
